Wild Mountain Thyme- Trailer

It isn’t often that a movie trailer gets this sort of attention.  As one reviewer put it:

Despite the PG-13 rating, the trailer also features the bloody, grisly and gratuitous murder of the Irish accent.

Here’s a link to the trailer.

Voter Fraud of Another Kind

Extracts from a report in the The Sydney Morning Herald, filed under ‘World Elections’:

New Zealand's annual Bird of the Year contest has actual proof of electoral interference - and it's not for the first time either.

Organisers of the 2020 contest have revealed that 1500 fraudulent votes have been cast for the little spotted kiwi, catapulting the bird into first place in this year's contest.

The interference took place between 1am and 3am, with the organisation's digital detectives deducing all of the votes arrived, by email, from the one computer IP address.

Megan Hubscher, Bird of the Year spokeswoman for advocacy group Forest and Bird, said the interference wasn't the first time the election had been hacked, either.

In 2018, rogue Australian actors attempted to pervert the course of New Zealand's election with 310 dodgy votes cast from across the pond.

Meanwhile, The Guardian highlighted another development in this election:

The poll’s success has attracted commercial interests, such as the endorsement this week by Adult Toy Megastore of the hihi, a “polyamorous, sexually fluid bird with big testicles”.

The hihi, or stitchbird, is the only bird in the world to mate face to face, according to a statement released by Adult Toy Megastore as part of its campaign endorsement.

Arby’s Deep Fried Turkey Pillow

For those who thought that the Ostrich pillow was strange, here’s something that tops that: a wearable “deep fried turkey pillow”.  It’s being sold by American fast food chain Arby’s, which is promoting it with this assurance:

…pairs with any turkey tryptophan to give you the best sleep in the history of the world.

Gojek- The Flow

It is an ad that befits the ambition of Indonesian tech company, Gojek, and conveys the seamless integration of multiple services under its super app.  It is also one of the most mind-blowing commercials of the year, especially in the way that it was visualised and filmed.

Consider these facts: it involved building a set to give the feel of a city, it engaged around 200 extras, and it features cars and bikes driving on walls, with very little use of CGI.  What’s more, three days before the shoot, part of the set was destroyed by a hurricane and had to be rebuilt.  And in case you’re wondering, it was shot in the middle of this year, “practicing thorough sanitisation and observing social distancing throughout the shoot”.

Here’s a link to the ad.

Here’s a link to a video that provides an overview of the campaign.

What the Chinese internet calls Trump

Nicknames are a way of life on the Chinese internet.  Netizens use these to secretively, mockingly, or affectionately reference practically anyone who is someone- from world leaders to local politicians, celebrities to sports stars.  But it might be hard to find someone who has more nicknames than Donald Trump.  This report lists seven nicknames that include Chuan Bao (“Trump the Baby”), Te Mei Pu (“very capricious”) and a sarcastic recent addition, Dong Wang (“the king of knowledge”).

Greens and Sex

Continuing PETA’s promotion of veganism as a way to enhance one’s libido,  this print campaign from earlier this year, features surreal imagery that looks like Ents getting it on.

A fun commercial that features a love story with a rather oily twist.

Voter Fraud Evidence

When asked where was the evidence to back his claim of voter fraud in the US election, this is what British politician, Nigel Farage had to say:

It's so new… it hasn't come to light yet…

The Girls Have Spoken

This US political ad stands out, among other things, for putting to rhythm one of the most extraordinary descriptions of Trump ever:

…a crotch-grabbing goblin, hugging power from his golden shower tower and resort.

Sound Asleep

Music albums that help you sleep are not new.  What’s unusual about this one is that it is made up of tracks composed from sounds of home appliances and gadgets that include microwaves, dishwashers, televisions, and vacuum cleaners, and it’s been “scientifically engineered” to put listeners to sleep.  It’s been commissioned by UK retailer, Currys PC World, and was inspired by a survey that suggested that a large number of people use white noise from home appliances and gadgets to help them fall asleep.

RIP Sean Connery

Who else could have said this line with such aplomb?

Trivia question: with which director did he do the most number of movies?

Habito- Demon Cleansing Ritual Kit

UK mortgage broker, Habito, has just announced an “exorcism service” for homebuyers.  From a Facebook post by the company:

Think your home could be a gateway to the underworld? Research found that 1 in 4 Brits believe their home is haunted, and 55% of people said they'd be put off buying a property if it was haunted.

So, this Halloween, we’ve launched our first “Demon Cleansing Ritual” kit for anyone spooked by the possibility that they aren’t the only presence in their home, (or a thoughtful housewarming gift for your friends who just bought!)

Would You Hire Trump?

That’s the rhetorical question at the heart of this anti-Trump ad, styled as a job interview.  More than the idea (which has been raised before, notably here), what makes it stand out is the acting, and the little touches (be sure to watch it till the end).

For me, the icing on the cake was this tweet by a prominent Trump parody account:

Just went on a job interview with @WinAmrcaBackPAC. I aced it. I aced the interview! Please share. Thank you!

Brusnika- Girl

From Russia: this is a beautiful, beguiling ad that brilliantly captures the shifting emotions of a young girl as she says goodbye to her old home. And it has a cheeky little twist.

Cheek2Cheek Dating App

To be more specific, it’s being pitched as a “poop-centric” dating app for “fecal aficionados”.  The founder of Tushy, the bidet company behind the app, explains the idea thus:

People's bathroom habits and comfort levels of pooping in front of a partner can be very divisive for a relationship and this app can help hash out those issues once and for all. With Cheek2Cheek you will be able to meet someone with a similar comfortability level about pooping as you.

According to this report in Forbes:

Aside from the standard matching criteria (age, gender, location, etc.,) Cheek2Cheek will also encourage and allow users to upload specifics about their bowel movements, bathroom habits and other butt/gut health related issues. This sounds absolutely horrible. While we’ve accepted fecal culture with a mildly open mind, taking that information and sharing it as some sort of attraction factor is a level of personal openness that even the most kink-centric dating apps dare not reach.

Once users sign up for Cheek2Cheek (likely while on the toilet, already doom scrolling through their apps) they can include pictures of themselves and their poop. That’s right, this app encourages fecal fetish pictures, as well as pictures of users’ physical bathrooms or toilet setups. Even though this app is poop-focused, it wouldn’t hurt to clean your bathroom a bit before posting it on a dating app you savages. Users, like other dating apps, can scroll through profiles and like or pas. If users match, they can message each other and the app also offers face-to-face video chat which again, will likely be used on the toilet because that’s where we are with this.

This is how the company website describes the app:

Cheek2Cheek is the first and only mobile dating app that matches you based on your booty preferences. Using a state-of-the-fart algorithm, Cheek2Cheek will find you the perfect ass for you to kiss and the only rump you’ll want to hump.

Weekend at Biden’s

An anti-Biden commercial that is genuinely funny- all the more, if you get the jokes.  The idea and the title come from a 1980s movie,Weekend at Bernie’s, in which the two leads lug around their dead boss, trying to convince everyone else that he is alive.

BABE Wine- Election Night Survival Kit

The kit includes a pillow to scream into, a pack of tissues, a stress ball (“to occupy your fingers so that you don't go off on Twitter”), a 4-pack of BABE Rosé cans, and a special “Polls Closing. Bottles Opening.” bottle of red wine.  In their words:

November 3rd is going to be wild AF, but BABE is here to help you get through it. This kit has everything you need if shit gets real.

Reportedly, the kit was sold out within 2 hours of its launch.
